Troop 591 Volunteer Positions

The following is a list of areas the Troop has need for assistance with. These areas supplement the Staff/Patrols. Click on the area or scroll down to see details and if we already have a volunteer. NOTE: to become a volunteer, you must have submitted an Adult Application and completed Youth Protection Training (YPT).

Popcorn Fundraiser
    • Once a year event
    • September - October
    • The Popcorn Kernel obtains information during a Roundtable meeting. Information includes order forms, process for popcorn ordering and distribution, and corresponding schedule. Information is provided to the scouts in Troop 591 during Monday meetings. Coordinate distribution of order forms to scouts, turning in orders, collecting money, picking up and distributing popcorn.
Fertilizer
    • Once a year event
    • ~March or ~April
    • In past years, this has been a very good fundraiser for the scouts. The percentage of money the scouts earn is higher than any other fundraiser. Scouts have been able to use these earnings to pay for summer camp.
    • This volunteer coordinates with the fertilizer distributor (i.e. Home Depot, Lowes). Provide information to the scouts. Coordinate distribution of forms, determine deadline for orders, coordinate pickup of fertilizer from Home Depot/Lowes/Other by scouts for subsequent delivery. Collect money and provide to Troop Treasurer. Coordinator works with the Troop Treasurer to make sure scout’s Troop account reflects earnings accordingly.
Campouts
    • Monthly
    • Troop 591 typically conducts a campout every month except “Summer Camp month”.
    • Volunteers can plan one or multiple campouts (pick your favorite month/months). This volunteer will work with the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters to plan the campout theme. We try to plan campouts that allow scouts to work on rank advancements and/or merit badges. Campouts also include some “leisure” or “fun” time for the scouts.

Provides information to scouts concerning fees, payment schedules, and merit badge classes that will be offered. Collects fees from scouts and works with Troop Treasurer to submit payment to Summer Camp facility. Submits permit to Council, coordinates transportation, insures medical forms are available for everyone attending, submits merit badge class selections to Summer Camp staff.
Score-O
    • Once a year event.
    • ~October
    • Score-O is an orienteering competition event for Troops usually at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch. Swim Month
    • Once a year event, typically in July.
    • This event is used to help scouts complete basic aquatic skills for rank advancement or complete swimming merit badge requirements that were not completed during Summer Camp.
    • Coordinator contacts representatives at Grants pool. Coordinate with and contact who will teach the various water skills. Determine nominal fee per scout (scouts pay at the door). This is scheduled on Mondays in place of the normal scout meeting.
Christmas Party
    • Usually occurs the first Monday in December.
    • Coordinate location (i.e. church, someone’s home) and provide the necessary information to the Troop.
Cross Over Ceremony Team
    • Can occur at various times during March, April, and May.
    • The Troop uses these ceremonies as a recruitment activity plus giving back to scouting. The Troop has an existing ceremony that can be used as is, modified, or develop a new one. Scouting websites provide a lot of great ideas.
    • Coordinator will recruit Troop 591 scouts to form the ceremony team. Ceremony team members can change periodically, if desired, to give several scouts in the Troop an opportunity to participate. Coordinate ceremony details with the Pack. Coordinate transportation and availability of costumes and props, as required.
